2003年にイギリスの公共放送ＢＢＣが行った愛読書アンケート「The Big Read」で、まず４月に事前投票（約14万票）を行いベスト100が選出された。
以下に掲載したのが、その時のベスト100作品である（タイトルのアルファベット順）。
アンケートの結果、上位21作品については、それぞれの作品にふさわしいリポーターが選ばれ30分のヴィデオ・クリップを作成された。そのヴィデオ・クリップは３本まとめて１時間半の番組となり、ＢＢＣ２で土曜日の午後９時から数週間（10月18日〜12月13日）に亘って放映され、それから再投票を行って最終的な順位づけを決定されている。このベスト21についてはこちらへ。
